His main research activity is based on the design and implementation of bioreactor systems for cell culture protocols in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Its activities are oriented towards the development of: (i) bioreactor systems for osteogenic, cartilaginous, tenogenic and angiogenic differentiation; (ii) 3D scaffold in the form of hydrogel or aerogel; (iii) in vitro tumor models for pre-clinical research protocols; (iv) devices for the non-destructive/real-time/in-line analysis, of 3D tissue construct based, on optical absorption or electrical impedance tomography.

Joseph Lovecchio published 9 papers/book chapters (8 out of them are indexed in ISI-WOS) and about 10 abstracts/posters. His 8 ISI-WOS/Scopus-indexed manuscripts in peer reviewed journals have received 20 citations and score H-index = 3 and G-index = 4.
